Preparing for 2025: A Goal-Setting Guide for Social Work Entrepreneurs

2024 was a transformative year for me, both personally and professionally. At the beginning of the year, I set a big goal: to open my private practice and be fully booked each week, while also leaving my contract position at the nursing home. But what made this even more meaningful is the reason behind it—entrepreneurship became incredibly important to me after moving to a new state with no family around. I wanted to ensure that my children had access to me without limits. I wanted the flexibility to attend school events, stay home when they were sick, and be present in their lives in a way that wasn’t possible in a traditional job. Creating a business that allowed me full autonomy was driven by my desire to be as present as possible for my kids.

What’s even more exciting is that I did all of this while simultaneously building my credentialed apparel brand, which creates apparel for social workers and counselors. The combination of both ventures pushed me to stay disciplined and focused, but the results have been incredibly rewarding.

Along the way, I’ve learned that entrepreneurship isn’t just about hard work; it’s also about having the right support system. Mentorship played a huge role—having the guidance and drive from people who have successfully done what I’m doing made a huge difference. And, of course, prayer was a constant source of strength and clarity.

Why Goal Setting Matters

Goal setting is the foundation of success, especially for entrepreneurs. It’s what transforms your dreams into a clear, actionable plan. Here’s why it’s so important:

  1. Clarity and Direction: Goals provide a clear vision of where you’re headed. Without them, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or directionless.
  2. Motivation: Goals inspire you to keep going, even when challenges arise. They serve as reminders of your “why.”
  3. Progress Tracking: Breaking down your goals into measurable steps helps you see how far you’ve come and what’s left to do.
  4. Accountability: Writing down your goals and sharing them with others increases your commitment to achieving them.

As social work entrepreneurs, we face unique challenges. We’re not only building businesses; we’re also improving lives. This makes it even more important to set intentional, achievable goals.

The Big Goal and Micro Goal System

One of the most effective strategies for goal setting is the big goal and micro goal system. This approach involves creating a major goal for the year and breaking it down into smaller, actionable quarterly goals. This method keeps you focused and ensures steady progress throughout the year.

How It Works

  1. Set Your Big Goal
Think about what you want to achieve by the end of 2025. Your big goal should reflect your vision and long-term aspirations.

    • Example: “I want to launch a group practice by Q1 2025.”
  2. Break It Down by Quarters
Divide your big goal into manageable steps to tackle each quarter. This keeps you from feeling overwhelmed and helps you stay on track.

    • Q1: Study for and pass my LCSW exam.
    • Q2: Get credentialed with insurance panels.
    • Q3: Obtain licensing in multiple states.
    • Q4: Complete group practice credentialing.
  3. Prepare for the Next Year
Align your Q4 goals with what you want to achieve in Q1 of the next year. This creates momentum going into 2025.

    • Example: With my practice credentialed in Q4, I’ll focus on marketing in Q1 2025 to attract clients.

Tips for Effective Goal Setting

To make your goals more than just words on paper, here are some actionable tips:

1. Be Specific

Vague goals lead to vague results. Define exactly what you want to achieve. Instead of “grow my practice,” aim for “add five new clients per month by Q2.”

2. Set Deadlines

Deadlines create urgency and keep you focused. Assign specific timelines to your goals and micro goals.

3. Create Action Steps

Break each goal into clear, actionable tasks. For example, passing your LCSW exam might involve enrolling in a prep course, creating a study schedule, and taking practice tests.

4. Track Your Progress

Use a planner, app, or spreadsheet to monitor your progress. Check in regularly to celebrate wins and adjust your plan as needed.

5. Celebrate Milestones

Small wins lead to big victories. Celebrate each milestone to stay motivated.

6. Stay Flexible

Life is unpredictable. If something doesn’t go as planned, adjust your goals while keeping your vision intact.

7. Visualize Success

Picture yourself achieving your goals. Visualization can boost your motivation and reinforce your commitment.

Making Your Goals a Living Thing

Goal setting is not a one-time event; it’s an ongoing process. Your goals should evolve and adapt as you grow. By breaking them into actionable steps and consistently working toward them, you’re creating a living, breathing plan for success.

As social work entrepreneurs, we’re not just building businesses; we’re creating opportunities to make a difference. The key is to dream big, plan strategically, and take consistent steps forward.
